A higher civilisation?

Xiao Yu had envisioned many possibilities, but he had never thought that this matter could be related to a higher civilisation.

According to human society’s definition of civilisation, civilisation should be composed of social and natural behaviours that enabled mankind to break away from barbarism. In the Interstellar Era, civilisation was given a new definition, and its existence might not even need human impetus because humans were not the only ones who could create civilisation in the universe.

Other intelligent beings also had the ability to create civilisations.

Civilisations collided with each other, just as human society did. In the early days, human beings expanded their own civilisation and devoured other civilisations through w-ars, but later on, when human beings entered a relatively peaceful stage, the interpenetration and integration of civilisations was itself a battle without smoke and mirrors.

Originally, there was no hierarchy of civilisations, but the development of civilisations was either fast or slow, and powerful civilisations outperformed weaker civilisations in every aspect. Under the absolute suppression of force, the hierarchy of civilisations came into being.

According to the original story, the Federation was a second-class civilisation, and the Independence Army and the Mermaid civilisation were also second-class.

The advanced civilisation that Afton was talking about was most likely a level 3 or even a level 4 civilisation.

Ji Canghai was also surprised to hear this answer, but he quickly hid the surprise in his eyes. “You mean that the mermaid’s genetic defects were also the work of an advanced civilisation?”

Afton nodded heavily. “The rapid development of the mermaid civilisation made them feel threatened, so they used an extremely covert virus to alter the genetic sequence of the mermaids. This virus is known as the TW6 virus; it is very covert and infectious, but slightly less lethal. As you know, it is impossible for any kind of virus to be both lethal and stealthy; the TW6 virus gave up its lethality and focused its influence on the Alphas’ pheromone genes, causing all the mermaid Alphas’ to contract this virus.”

Xiao Yu couldn’t help but ask him, “If that’s the case, why is it that a mermaid Omega’s spiritual energy can cure this virus?”

Afton patiently explained, “As I said, no virus can be both lethal and insidious. The power of the TW6 virus caused the genes of the mermaids to be damaged while at the same time the genes to resist the TW6 virus appeared, and these genes were attached to the Omega pheromone genes. As time passes and generations change, the emergence of virus-resistant genes will no longer be so harsh, and perhaps soon, such genes will appear in mermaid betas or even alphas, which is why advanced civilisations are studying mermaid betas.”

Was this the advanced civilisation’s way of exhibiting aggression? It was too cruel.

It was hard for Xiao Yu not to feel sad for the mermaid population. Being targeted by a jackal-like advanced civilisation, even living in peace and happiness was a luxury.

“I have told you all that you want to know; I will send back all the mermaids that have been bought and sold as soon as possible, and I also hope that you will keep your word.” Afton pondered for a moment: “If possible, I still want to meet this mermaid Omega face-to-face.”

Ji Canghai flatly refused, “That’s impossible.”

It was impossible for him to let others know that Xiao Yu was the Mermaid Omega, especially after Afton told them about the conspiracy of the advanced civilisation. Since it was known that the Mermaid Omega could solve the genetic defects of the mermaid race, once Xiao Yu’s identity was exposed, the advanced civilisation would never let him off easily.

He looked towards the thoughtful Xiao Yu beside him and pressed down the urge to hide Xiao Yu, leading him away from Afton’s mansion.

After returning to the airship, Xiao Yu asked him what his plans were.

Since Afton knew Ji Canghai’s identity, the Twilight Forest’s invitation wasn’t necessary to attend, and the two had  exchanged contact information, they just had to wait for Afton to contact Ji Canghai after saving the mermaids that were being sent to the advanced civilisation.

Without any accidents, their spaceship could now travel towards Changgeng Star.

But the problem was that there was still a group of captured mermaids on this ship, and how to deal with them was also a problem.

Ji Canghai was more interested in knowing what Xiao Yu thought, so he threw the question back to him: “So what do you think?”

“Me?” Xiao Yu froze and then thought seriously, “You know where I come from, and to be honest, I don’t really want to have anything to do with the mermaid clan, but if I really am the only hope for the mermaids to cure their genetic defects, I’m still willing to help them, on the premise that it won’t waste too much of my time and energy.”

Hearing the expected answer, Ji Canghai shook his head and lost his smile. “You’re still too kind, Xiao Yu; do you think it’s possible for the mermaids to let you off the hook when they learn about your identity?”

Obviously not.

Xiao Yu sighed. There was no way he would put himself in danger and bondage just to help the mermaids; he had never been such a self-sacrificing character, not to mention that he didn’t have any sense of belonging to the mermaids.

“Then just release the mermaids,” Xiao Yu said with uncertainty. “They should be able to find their way back, right?”

Ji Canghai amusedly replied, “If you are really unsure, you can ask Afton to send them back to the Mermaid Planet.”

Xiao Yu shook his head. “I’m not uneasy about anything; I’m just worried that if we let them stray, there’s no guarantee that they won’t say something that will make the advanced civilisation notice us. We don’t have the ability to fight against the advanced civilisation yet, and with Afton’s ambiguous attitude, I don’t trust him very much.”

Afton’s trust was delivered so quickly that it made him feel, from the bottom of his heart, that something wasn’t quite right.

But where it was wrong, he couldn’t say.

“There is no harm; advanced civilisations are not so concerned about what these mermaids say,” Ji Canghai pacified. “Advanced civilisations do not have the leisure to pay attention to this group of irrelevant mermaids; they are exhaustively thinking about how to occupy unowned or owned resource stars every day.”

Slightly relieved, Xiao Yu nodded and couldn’t help but turn to Ji Canghai. “Advanced civilisations are actually able to change the genes of mermaids; has their biotechnology advanced to such a degree?”

Ji Canghai: “It’s true that the technology of advanced civilisations is incomparable to that of second-tier civilisations, but it’s not to the extent of being heaven-defying. It’s hard to create something, but it’s much easier to destroy it, especially something as complex and delicate as genes. Just by slightly moving a sequence, the entire gene expression would change drastically. Xiao Yu, you don’t have to worry too much; the conflicts between the advanced civilisations are also very intense; they don’t dare to rashly violate the Interstellar Law, or else they will become a target.”

Xiao Yu nodded thoughtfully. If it were not for the constraints of the interstellar law, the advanced civilisations wouldn’t need to subconsciously interfere with the process of the mermaid civilisation by destroying their genes.

influence character by environment?

Xiao Yu suddenly thought of something: “You say, is there a possibility that an advanced civilisation could implant a chip in a person’s brain and help a mediocre person grow into an extremely talented general?”

Ji Canghai only thought that he was imagining things and couldn’t help but retort, “What kind of novel have you been reading? The information on the Star Network is mixed, so just read it and don’t take it too seriously.”

Xiao Yu had a hidden conjecture; he urged Ji Canghai, “Don’t interrupt; I’m asking you if it’s possible.”

“So serious?” Ji Canghai was flabbergasted, realising that Xiao Yu wasn’t joking with him; his expression also became a few points more serious. “Fang Xiu knows more than me about the technical aspects; let’s go ask him.”

Xiao Yu followed Ji Canghai to find Fang Xiu and asked the question again.

Worthy of being someone who specialised in this path, Fang Xiu quickly gave an answer: “The speculation of a chip controlling the human brain was raised a long time ago, and it was precisely the Uto civilisation, a tertiary civilisation in a similar position to the human civilisation, that raised this speculation.”

Ji Canghai added, “The Uto civilisation has coveted the human civilisation for a long time, but due to the existence of the Interstellar Law, they didn’t have the chance to launch an invasion.”

“Indeed, due to the fact that this conjecture is too cruel, the relevant experiments have long been banned.” Fang Xiu pushed up his glasses. “But it doesn’t rule out the case of them researching privately; although the human brain is constructed in a complex way, it is still very possible to make some simple commands according to the chip’s requirements with the chip implanted.”

Xiao Yu thought for a moment, “What if there is no need to make commands, but just dialogue with the person who has been implanted with the chip?”

“That won’t be a problem at all.” Fang Xiu replied.

Xiao Yu’s pupils shrank slightly; according to the original depiction, the male lead, Gu Xijiao, woke up one day and suddenly found himself with an additional system. The system only issued tasks and obtained rewards for him, and those rewards were obtained by mail. The reason why the novel was cool was entirely because, although the system brought many benefits to the host, it didn’t give them to an outrageous degree, allowing the protagonist to grow through life and death trials and tribulations over and over again.

All of the resources acquired through the system were actually there—nothing beyond the setting of the Great Interstellar Age.

And since advanced civilisations could destroy mermaid genes, it was also possible to modify human genes and improve their physique.

So was there a possibility that, in fact, the Uto civilisation’s aggression against human civilisation had long been planned, and the so-called system in the original story was actually a chip or a tool for the Uto civilisation to control Gu Xijiao and achieve a certain purpose?

“If there is a chip hidden in the brain, can it be detected through an instrument?” Xiao Yu asked hurriedly.

Fang Xiu gave an affirmative reply: “A chip implanted in the brain will be detected by a particle detector even if it uses materials with a concealment effect. However, particle detectors are expensive and consume a large amount of energy every time they are used, and they can only be seen on the main planets of major galaxies.”

Xiao Yu looked at Ji Canghai and said, “I suspect that Gu Xijiao’s brain is holding the chip of the Uto civilisation.”

Ji Canghai had exchanged memories with Xiao Yu, and after Xiao Yu’s reminder, he also instantly thought of this possibility: “I’ll immediately send someone to capture him for examination.”

Fang Xiu had said that particle detectors were only available on the galaxy’s main planet.

“Then we’ll depart immediately and return to Changgeng Planet to wait for the results.” Xiao Yu sealed the deal.
