C51 — The Promise

Mu Sichen was very hesitant to hold this book; he was worried that he would enter this book directly and face the remnants of Big Eye’s power head on.

Since there was a hidden backhand of Big Eye’s resurrection within the library, once he entered the wrong book and encountered the Big Eye, he might be devoured by the Big Eye, and the power that he had worked so hard to obtain would be devoured by Big Eye and become His food.

But on second thought, if the power of the big eye hidden in the library was so easily found, then Shen Jiyue wouldn’t have spent so many days just transforming the library from a crescent moon to an upper string.

Danger may be there, but he should be able to withstand it.

After figuring this out, Mu Sichen opened the book.

This was indeed a bedtime story, a cartoon version with colourful images and only one line of text on each page.

It was about a man who saved a group of injured people, and they lived happily in a home. But they couldn’t leave the house because it was full of monsters, and if they left, they would be eaten.

But some family members would escape, and some would die. The families would ask the protagonist, “Why didn’t you protect us? Why do people always die?”

The protagonist was sad; he just couldn’t see everyone’s every move; he just couldn’t take care of everything, so what should he do?

So the protagonist made a wish; he wished that his eyes could be hung up in the sky and he could see everyone in his family at every moment.

From then on, his eyes got bigger and bigger, and his vision got wider and wider.

Finally, one day, his body disappeared completely, and he became a big eye hanging in the sky, which could protect all his family members, and if there was any disobedient family member, he would turn him into an eye so that he could see how scary the outside world was.

From then on, the family stopped running around and lived happily in their home forever.

The story was very short, with only a few sentences. After reading it, Mu Sichen closed the book with a complicated expression.

A clear-eyed person could tell at a glance that the book didn’t fully tell the story of Tongzhi Town and Big Eye.

There may have been a lot of embellishment, but some of it was true.

Mu Sichen himself had the experience of almost being counter-contaminated by the townspeople, and he wondered if the same thing had happened to Big Eye, who initially just wanted to protect the townspeople but was burdened with too many expectations and ultimately went crazy.

If the truth was indeed as recorded in the bedtime story, then this was really a sad story.

But the most important thing for Mu Sichen at this moment wasn’t the truth, but the fact that he didn’t enter the books.

Mu Sichen put down the bedtime story with some despondency; he thought that he would be able to enter into it by opening a random book, but he didn’t expect it to be like that.

Did he choose the wrong book?

So Mu Sichen skipped over bedtime stories like “My Two or Three Affairs with the Moon,” “Dreaming of an Ideal Home,” “After Growing Tentacles, I Can Finally Embrace All of Humanity,” and other bedtime stories that were related to divine monsters at first glance and focused on looking for the books that He Fei had stayed in.

He flipped through it for a long time and finally found the book “Little Colourful Fish.”.

And at that moment, He Fei sent another message.

Your Brother Fei: [From planting to stock price plummet, why is the bean life of a coffee bean so up and down?]

Mu Sichen: “……”

While he was struggling to find a way to get into books, He Fei had already started dabbling in social science literature.

Mu Sichen opened the book Little Colourful Fish.

The book told the story of the mother fish, who gave birth to a litter of nine small, colourful fish. All the other small, colourful fish were colourful and beautiful, except for the protagonist, who was a black fish with a diamond shaped  on his head.

The little black fish had very low self-esteem. He had never understood why he was different from other brothers and sisters. He asked the motherfish why all day long, but how could the motherfish know such a complicated problem? So she only told him that “you are the ugliest little coloured fish.”.

The next page was a bit strange.

This page read: “When the little black fish got the answer, he lost all his will to fight, realised that he was different from the other little colourful fish, and sadly left the school, and was eventually caught and served at the dinner table.”

This was an unusually dark and deeply saddening bedtime story, but this page was drawn with a red pen with a cross, as if negating the ending.

When Mu Sichen turned to the next page, he saw that the story had turned into the little black fish didn’t stop asking questions even after knowing the answer; it kept asking around its mother, “Mom, since I’m the ugliest little colourful fish, do I have any other advantages?” “” “Mom, am I the strongest little colourful fish? “Mom, am I the cutest little colourful ish?” “”Mom, am I the smartest little colourful fish?”.

The mother fish finally got tired of being asked and told him loudly, “Yes, you are the smartest little colourful fish; don’t bother me!”

The little black fish got the answer and became very proud from then on. Every day, he swam back and forth in the lake with his head held high, becoming the most beautiful and unique big blackfish in the lake for viewing.

Every tourist who came here would meet this smart big black fish and feed it some food, and it was so proud and happy for the rest of its life.

Mu Sichen: “……”

He was sure he got the right book, and it was the very first message He Fei sent, “Mom, am I the smartest little colourful fish?”. This question was also the key to changing the ending.

Mu Sichen still couldn’t get into the book, but he vaguely realised the key to it.

Perhaps it was the denial of the ending that allowed He Fei to successfully enter the book.

“Pillar” was an energy body that relied on emotional energy to survive, and its perception of emotions was very strong. When Mu Sichen and his trio were in the sanatorium, just a little bit of despair arose, and the “Pillar” captured it and separated a sliver of its line of sight to observe them.

Emotion was a very crucial element.

Just now, when he was reading the bedtime story about the big eye, he was only disappointed, which obviously didn’t meet the conditions of the “pillar,” and therefore it didn’t allow him to enter the book.

So what kind of emotion was right? A spirit of rebellion against fate?

Mu Sichen didn’t think so.

Whether it was Big Eye, Shen Jiyue, or even Qin Zu, they wouldn’t allow an overly strong spirit of resistance to appear in their domains, which would shake their foundations.

Obedience, faith, and respect were what they needed.

Then what exactly were the emotions that made He Fei enter the book?

Mu Sichen flipped through the two endings of Little Colourful Fish several times and still didn’t find an answer.

He put down the book and flipped through the other one, which was the Cinderella story he was familiar with. After reading it, Mu Sichen tried emotions such as sympathy, kindness, and wit and still didn’t trigger the conditions to enter the book.

Mu Sichen flew through several books with nothing to show for it, and over there, He Fei had already started researching how to have toned muscles.

It felt like if He Fei was allowed to stay in the game for a while longer, he’d be flying high as a scholar.

Since deliberately cultivated emotions couldn’t let him enter books, it was better to let nature take its course and read extensively to generate different emotions. There was always one emotion that would be right.

Bedtime stories were the shortest books; if he read them faster in one glance, he could flip through the whole book in less than a minute, so Mu Sichen decided to just stay in front of the bedtime story column.

After reading a few stories in a row, he even boldly flipped through The Two or Three Things About Me and the Moon.

This bedtime story focused on a person’s mental state during the four periods of the new moon, the first quarter moon, the half moon, and the full moon, from the emotional smoothness of the new moon to the seemingly magnificent but actually maniacal transformation of the full moon, showing Mu Sichen perfectly how a person could go crazy.

For this book, Mu Sichen’s takeaway was that the moon was indeed an evil god that could most easily pollute people.

The master of the story was too horribly polluted by merely looking up at the new moon and anticipating the sight of a full moon.

Just by reading this book, Mu Sichen felt that he was mentally polluted and needed to wash his eyes.

He put the book back in its original place and opened the book, I Can Finally Embrace All of Humanity After Growing Tentacles.

This was the book that Mu Sichen thought was most likely to be related to Qin Zu; he had only entered the boundary domain by relying on the power of the little octopus, and it was natural that he wanted to alleviate the pollution caused by the moon by turning to Qin Zu for help.

Moreover, one of Shen Jiyue’s titles was “Spiritual Dominator.” Qin Zu also happened to have the title of “Absolute Reasoner.” Literally, Qin Zu’s power implicitly restrained Shen Jiyue.

This book was the best choice.

Mu Sichen opened the book, and what came to his eyes was a tall man with sword eyebrows, starry eyes, and hard features, which made people feel safe just from looking at his face.

The drawing was also very realistic and looked not far from the real person.

Mu Sichen had a feeling that he had seen Qin Zu’s true face.

Before he had time to read the words underneath the drawing, Mu Sichen’s entire attention was attracted to the drawing.

He hadn’t dealt with Qin Zu too little, but he had never seen the other party’s face. Only the totem, a cute little octopus, a cute little tentacle, and the tall man hidden in the mist were seen.

What did the real Qin Zu look like?

Was it the same as what was drawn on the painting? How tall was he? This painting was almost one meter nine according to the scale, right? Did this painting truly show Qin Zu’s appearance? Would it be embellished to a certain extent?

Mu Sichen’s finger involuntarily fell on the face of the drawing, and the next second, his surroundings changed.

The storybook was gone, the bookshelf was gone, and all that was left was a barren ruin and the endless sadness in his heart.

He had entered the book!

Although he didn’t know what emotions caused it, he managed to enter the book.

And became Qin Zu.

Yes, he became the protagonist of the book.

But he hadn’t even looked at what the book was actually about or how the story should develop, and with just a picture, he had entered.

Mu Sichen was a bit dazed.

That was when he realised that he was standing on a high hillock, and a group of people were being located below, looking at him with hope in their eyes.

One of the people he still recognised was none other than Yao Wangping.

“Admiral Qin, this is our town; please name it.” A man who looked like a leader said.

Mu Sichen could only mimic Qin Zu’s voice and said in a calm and dignified manner, “What are your wishes?”

“I hope that after our struggle, mankind will finally be able to get rid of the effects of the cataclysm and live a peaceful, safe life.” A man said.

“Then let’s call it Xiangping Town.” This time, Mu Sichen didn’t move, and his body automatically made a sound.

Startling from these words, Mu Sichen felt that he lost control of his body and became a spectator, watching the development of the bedtime story from a distance.

“Yes!” The man raised his hand and said, “This is where we will settle down and where mankind will begin to rebuild their home!”

The crowd cheered.

At this time, Yao Wangping came in front of “Qin Zu.” At this time, Yao Wangping was not so cold and emotionless; his eyes were full of complex emotions.

His right hand stretched out three fingers and placed them on his forehead, saluting deeply.

He said to “Qin Zu,” “Admiral Qin, if I can make the world return to normal and mankind return to their pre-cataclysmic life, please feel free to use this life of mine as you wish.”

Like Yao Wangping, countless others said to Qin Zu, “Please feel free to use my life; it’s voluntary.”

Countless expectations flooded Qin Zu like a tsunami, and he was so wrapped up in these expectations that he couldn’t stand still and couldn’t even breathe.

The souls that were voluntarily offered to him were so delicious, as if they were desserts within his reach.

The knot in “Qin Zu’s” throat twitched, and he quietly closed his eyes, no longer gazing at those souls.

“I will protect you all.”” Qin Zu spoke slowly, uttering a promise.

At that moment, while the others heard the promise, Mu Sichen heard the words Qin Zu failed to say.

“I will protect you all and will not let any god-ranked monsters harm you, including myself.”

Along with these words, all the emotions in his body disappeared; both desires and wishes were all erased by him.

In his soul, only the promise remained.

Since then, he became Him.
