C100

Duan Hengye appearing here, seemed to be an unexpected thing, but also considered expected.

The research results of Lan Jingchi were closely related to the toxin that Duan Hengye used to carry, and his relationship with Lan Jingchi had long been a consensus. But the current situation on the interstellar wasn’t simple, as the marshal’s spouse Duan Hengye’s every move was already under the spotlight, not to mention after the press conference that was also closely related to his life experience.

In the period of time after the event, all the big and small interstellar media that could be named have sent invitations to Duan Hengye for interviews through the Institute and the Ministry of Military Affairs. But unfortunately, although people were looking forward to this interview, Duan Hengye didn’t accept any of them.

Even during this time, Duan Hengye also put off many public appearances on the grounds that he was busy with work. But the heat of the event didn’t fall, although a period of time had passed, online discussion still didn’t stop. Even because Duan Hengye hadn’t appeared, people got more and more curious.

It could be said that if this award ceremony was held before the press conference, it was estimated that many people would bet on Duan Hengye attending the event. But who asked it to be the day after the conference, no one guessed his arrival in advance.

This burst of applause was unexpectedly long, they waited until Duan Hengye completely stood on the stage, after a long time, the sound gradually stopped. Seeing this, Duan Hengye, who hadn’t appeared in public for a long time, stood there and gently bowed towards the audience, then stood up straight again, “First of all, thank you very much for the invitation, it is my honor to stand here to present such a heavyweight award.”

After entering this world, Duan Hengye’s eloquence had indeed grown in the Institute’s meeting after meeting, as well as An Lou’s lectures. If someone who knew him in the previous life saw this scene, they wouldn’t have thought that this man in front of them was the slightly socially frightened Duan Hengye back then.

Then Duan Hengye focused on Lan Jingchi who was sitting in the first row. After finding Duan Hengye looking at him, Lan Jingchi smiled at him, and then slowly moved his folded hands to his chin.

“…… I can say that everything I know about medicine comes from Lan Jingchi. And as you all know, I personally can stand here today, also thanks to the research of Lan Jingchi.” Duan Hengye spoke with an unusually serious expression, especially when he got to the end there, he slowed down.

Today there were quite a few audience members who were engaged in the field of pharmaceutical research, and even if they weren’t related to the field, they had also been well educated by the Star Network about the complexity of the toxins in Duan Hengye during this recent period. Now when they heard Duan Hengye mention this, the viewers not only appreciated and admired Lan Jingchi, but also had a few more sighs of relief for Duan Hengye’s experience.

After that live broadcast, Duan Hengye’s image was no longer a simple “research institute director” or “male god” like before, but had become more flesh and blo-od.

As a researcher, the people here know how much trust it took to put a student in charge of detoxification work. So after seeing these two people appear at the scene of the event, everyone’s heart was filled with both admiration for the results achieved by Lan Jingchi, but also appreciation of Duan Hengye.

From the live screen, it could be seen that after hearing Duan Hengye’s words, the eyes of Lan Jingchi sitting in the first row even faintly showed a little moisture. Duan Hengye continued: “Lan Jingchi is a very outstanding young pharmaceutical researcher, from him, I see the future of this profession and hope. And right now, in addition to being a researcher, Lan Jingchi is also a student at An Luo University.”

Next, Duan Hengye looked into Lan Jingchi’s eyes, “An Luo is proud of you, and so am I.”

After finishing his speech, Duan Hengye once again nodded his head towards the direction where Lan Jingchi was sitting in the audience. And after seeing the other’s action, Lan Jingchi finally stood up amidst the applause, and then walked quickly onto the stage.

Duan Hengye opened his arms and embraced this teenager. He could feel that today’s Lan Jingchi was very excited. When embracing, the slight tremble on the other was caught by Duan Hengye. The crowd then saw Professor Duan on stage stretch out his hand to pat Lan Jingchi’s back, and then he whispered something to him. After a while, Lan Jingchi stood up straight again.

Unknowingly, Lan Jingchi’s height had already exceeded Duan Hengye’s by a lot. Duan Hengye handed the trophy that was on one side to Lan Jingchi’s hand, and after receiving it, Lan Jingchi was suddenly silent. After noticing this, the scene suddenly quieted down, everyone was waiting for his next words.

According to the procedure of the award ceremony, when the trophy came to the hands of Lan Jingchi, Duan Hengye should walk off the stage. But Lan Jingchi’s gaze was still fixed on Duan Hengye, after noticing this, Duan Hengye didn’t get off the stage, but stood there waiting for Lan Jingchi’s next words.

After awarding the prize, Duan Hengye stood back a little. So now Lan Jingchi was looking at Duan Hengye, almost backing the camera, at this time the whole room couldn’t clearly see his expression, they could only see Duan Hengye.

Duan Hengye saw that although Lan Jingchi was smiling, his eyes were very complicated. This look may not be read by the former Duan Hengye, but now he was able to understand – in that long ago together, Lan Jingchi had some special emotions for him. But perhaps since that long letter last time, Lan Jingchi, the screwed up male supporting character in “Dumping Interstellar”, finally had such feelings.

After a moment of silence, Lan Jingchi pursed his lips, he went up to Duan Hengye and said softly, “Thanks, brother.”

After saying that, Lan Jingchi finally turned to face the audience, and then began to deliver his own acceptance speech. The word “brother” from the letter was a completely different concept from hearing it actually come out of Lan Jingchi’s mouth. After hearing this word, Duan Hengye first froze for a moment, then he revealed a bright smile.

Lan Jingchi had already turned around and started to speak, sobDuan Hengye’s expression was only seen by the audience below. Although a simple smile wasn’t a big deal, but this person was Duan Hengye! From the press conference, they learned that the royal family used to control Duan Hengye with a dr-ug that had certain emotion-suppressing ingredients, which was an important reason why he used to look “cold”.

Although Duan Hengye had become more vivid in recent times, it seemed that this was the first time that he had smiled in front of a camera.

Because Lan Jingchi was speaking, the audience who saw Duan Hengye’s expression, although they were very excited, they still swallowed the scream that had rushed to their mouths. However, Lan Jingchi’s eyesight was good, he immediately saw that the audience’s emotions were a bit wrong, and then habitually looked at where Duan Hengye was standing just now.

But unfortunately, at the same time, Duan Hengye had already turned around and left the stage. When Lan Jingchi looked, he only saw the back of that person leaving.

Lan Jingchi looked away, and even his speech wasn’t interrupted by this. He behaved very naturally, but only he himself knew, seeing that back, the bottom of his heart actually grew with a little bit of sadness.

This emotion only lasted for a few seconds, then Lan Jingchi continued his speech, and Duan Hengye also took advantage of that, and quickly walked to the exit with his assistant Ye Pu.

It was as if nothing had happened.

……

Those who had been following the matter of new mecha manufacturing could find that the introduction of the top mecha was much more low-key compared to the mecha design and manufacturing work that took place not long ago. As a weapon that could shock the stars, there were too many people who were concerned about its manufacturing and experimental progress, and in order to ensure that the later experiments weren’t disturbed, southern star had sent staff to control the relevant discussions.

This wasn’t only to keep the results secret for the time being, but also to reduce the pressure on Duan Hengye.

Now that the manufacturing of the mecha was about to end, the burden on Duan Hengye’s heart wasn’t only not reduced, but was getting heavier every day.

As the countdown to manufacturing approached, Meng Jinhuai came to the research institute more frequently.

One day at noon, wearing a black military uniform, Meng Jinhuai crossed the long silver closed corridor outside the manufacturing room and entered the room. After hearing the sound, Su Mingge, who was standing opposite the mecha and was looking at the data light screen next to him, greeted Meng Jinhuai, and then left very consciously.

Meng Jinhuai saw that at this moment, Duan Hengye was studying something on his light computer, his brow was tightly furrowed, and he looked extra solemn.

“What’s wrong, Ah Heng? Is there something wrong?” Seeing that Duan Hengye had been ignoring him, Meng Jinhuai walked over to him. After hearing Meng Jinhuai’s words, Duan Hengye put down the things in his hands like he was waking up from a dream and looked at him.

Duan Hengye gently bit his lips, then shook his head, “It’s okay, I’m just …… watching the progress of the mecha assembly.”

Meng Jinhuai went over and swept Duan Hengye into his arms, and then the two of them walked towards the experimental table on the side. In fact, Meng Jinhuai saw it a while ago, as the end date of the mecha manufacturing was approaching, Duan Hengye was visibly getting more nervous day by day.

At first, Meng Jinhuai didn’t actively mention it, but now, he felt that it was time for him to talk to Duan Hengye.

“What are you nervous about, Ah Heng?” Meng Jinhuai didn’t ask if Duan Hengye was nervous, but directly asked the other the reason for his nervousness. After hearing Meng Jinhuai’s question, Duan Hengye was silent for a while, and only after they sat down on the chairs next to the experimental table did Duan Hengye hesitantly speak, “…… I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m worried that the results aren’t as good as they should be.”

Duan Hengye had long found that after these recent events, there were already many people in the stars who had put him on the altar of a god. Not only the distant netizens, but even the staff from the Institute around him. They couldn’t seem to imagine the word “failure” appearing on Duan Hengye.

But Duan Hengye himself couldn’t be so confident.

Although the virtual model of the top mecha had successfully passed a series of simulation experiments, as the designer, he knew that the variables in the top mecha were much greater than those in the mass-produced mecha. It was able to pass the simulation experiments successfully, but it didn’t mean that the follow-up would also be so easy to pass.

Now Duan Hengye was really burdened with the expectations of too many people, both his students, and colleagues from the Institute …… and the citizens of the entire Empire.

They were all looking forward to the introduction of this new mecha that could lead the Ye Tian Empire out of the long period of war.

Duan Hengye only said that he was “worried that the results would not be satisfactory”, but Meng Jinhuai, who had been spending time with him, read more and deeper concerns on his face.

Even if he didn’t show it much, Meng Jinhuai knew that Duan Hengye was a person who cared about other people’s opinions and wasn’t willing to betray their trust. The current expectations of the new mecha from all over the empire were both giving Duan Hengye trust and invariably increasing the pressure on him.

Meng Jinhuai held Duan Hengye’s hand lightly, after a long time in a high position, the Marshal wasn’t a person who was too good at comforting people. After thinking for a while, Meng Jinhuai finally spoke: “…… you are standing at the tip of the pyramid of the industry at this age and have achieved so much, it is already unimaginable for normal people. Don’t be so stressed, just live for yourself.”

After hearing Meng Jinhuai’s words, Duan Hengye’s mood got less tense. Duan Hengye understood, he knew that he was really lucky compared to those predecessors who had been researching for years, but the results were all wasted in the simulation experiment. Even Duan Hengye was also clear that even if the simulation experiment failed at this time, no one would come out and accuse him.

But this still couldn’t offset the deepest tension in Duan Hengye’s heart, or more appropriately, fear.

After a moment of silence, Duan Hengye turned to look at Meng Jinhuai, “No…… actually what I am most worried about is not this.”

After seeing Duan Hengye’s serious expression, Meng Jinhuai got curious. “Then what is it?”

Duan Hengye moved his eyes back to the mecha not far away. Unlike the last time when there was only a rough metal frame, today the general outline of the mecha was infinitely closer to what it looked like on the virtual model.

“I’m worried about the test flight.” After a while, Duan Hengye spoke.

Duan Hengye’s answer made Meng Jinhuai unable to react, but before the Marshal spoke, Duan Hengye once again turned over to look at Meng Jinhuai, he continued almost word for word: “In the entire interstellar, the only person who can pilot this mecha is you, right?”

What Duan Hengye said was the truth, and after hearing it, Meng Jinhuai couldn’t help but nod.

Seeing this, Duan Hengye continued in an affirmative tone, “Then the test flight will also be conducted by you.”

A while ago Duan Hengye was really a bit busy, and also never thought about this aspect. But recently, as the mecha gradually approached the design, the question of test flight suddenly came to mind.

Unlike the mass-produced mechas that most people could pilot before, the top-tier mecha in front of them was originally designed for Meng Jinhuai. The entire interstellar had the marshal who was able to pilot it after his spiritual energy rose again, except for him there was absolutely no second person who could turn on the mecha in front of him.

In this way, the very dangerous task of test flight naturally fell on Meng Jinhuai.

The mecha that the marshal was driving now was directly upgraded from the previous generation, compared to it, the test flight of the completely new mecha in front of him was much more dangerous.

Meng Jinhuai didn’t expect that Duan Hengye’s nervousness came from this matter. Meng Jinhuai opened his mouth, but didn’t know what he should say. After another moment, Meng Jinhuai suddenly gave Duan Hengye a hug, then gently whispered, “You have to trust me.”

Although he wasn’t a person who was good at comforting others, Meng Jinhuai’s words unexpectedly made Duan Hengye relax. Now Duan Hengye’s mood was already very tense, if at this time he had said “I believe you”, Duan Hengye wouldn’t say anything on the surface, but the pressure would definitely be even greater.

Meng Jinhuai didn’t say he believed in Duan Hengye, but told him to believe in him.

This wasn’t Meng Jinhuai’s well-thought-out words, but his instinctive reaction.

On hearing this, Duan Hengye was stunned for a moment, then buried his face im Meng Jinhui’s shoulder and gently hummed.

……

The last time the first mass-produced mecha was born, not only were all the main people in charge of the research institute present, but even the military ministry came with a lot of people, which couldn’t be described as only lively. But this time it was different. On the day when the manufacturing was expected to end, Duan Hengye didn’t invite anyone over, but shut himself up alone in the mecha manufacturing room.

At this time several small manufacturing robots were still flying around the mecha, preparing for the final assembly work. Duan Hengye, dressed in a white research suit, put his hands in his pockets and looked at the mecha in front of him with no expression.

The size of the top mecha was far from the usual mass-produced mechas, and if someone who hadn’t seen it before suddenly barged in, they would have been surprised by the huge aura. If you look at the height alone, the mecha was already the same as a small mountain. When people looked up, they may even get a feeling of vertigo.

He didn’t know if it was because he faced the mecha every day, or because Duan Hengye was the designer of the mecha, but when he looked at the mecha, his mood was unexpectedly calm. The experimental clothes of the Ye Tian Empire’s Mecha Research Institute were like the white coats of the Earth era, and now Duan Hengye looked like a surgeon.

From the corner of his eyes, he saw that the assembly progress bar located on the side of the mecha had already loaded to ninety-nine percent at this time. Seeing this, Duan Hengye went over and gently tapped the light screen, and then the more detailed progress numbers appeared in front of Duan Hengye’s eyes after “ninety-nine”.

Ninety-nine point nine seven percent, already infinitely close to the end.

Because the mecha was too high, Duan Hengye wasn’t able to clearly see its appearance. So from just now, Duan Hengye’s eyes had been falling on the light screen of this real-time monitoring. Although it seemed that the progress was only a little short, but the loading of this point also required a lot of time.

He stood there without moving, not knowing how much time had passed when the progress was finally down to the last 0.01 percent.

“Please enter the mecha name.”

The final step in mecha manufacturing was to engrave its name on it. The last chat with Meng Jinhuai had eased Duan Hengye’s anxiety to a certain extent, but he was still nervous about the real-time supervision of the assembly data. It was only now that he saw the prompt on top of the light screen that Duan Hengye remembered that he hadn’t named this new top-tier mecha yet.

Duan Hengye adjusted the light screen to handwriting mode, then thought for a while before picking up the pen that went with it.

“Nanwei,” Duan Hengye wrote out these two words.

The last mass-produced mecha born in Duan Hengye’s hands was named “Nan Zhu”, and this time he gave the name of Nan Zhu’s Nan to Meng Jinhuai’s mecha. This name suddenly appeared in Duan Hengye’s mind, and for a while he couldn’t say exactly why he gave this name to the mecha in front of him, but instinct still told Duan Hengye to write it down.

Immediately Duan Hengye put the pen down, the robot that had been flying in the air also received the signal and proceeded to engrave those two words on top of the mecha as he had written.

After hearing the sound coming from above, Duan Hengye gently took a few steps backward, then looked up at the highest part of the mecha. On the huge mecha that had been painted black, the words “Nanwei” slowly appeared.

Although the manufacturing progress of the mecha Nanwei had been in a semi-secret state, there were people on the Internet that probably guessed its birth time through the previous example. Because Southern Star controlled the discussion, there weren’t many reports on the Internet, but the discussion on the forum wasn’t less than half.

Now it was already past the time of the birth of the mecha that everyone guessed, and seeing that the Institute hadn’t issued any announcement, people who had been following this matter couldn’t help getting anxious.

The surprise came at this time, the birth of the new mecha wasn’t announced by the Institute or Southern Star, but by Marshal Meng Jinhuai himself on his social media account.

Meng Jinhuai posted a picture of the mecha with its name.

“From @Duan Hengye. ‘Nanwei’.” If one were to listen to this alone without looking at the accompanying picture, it would be as if Duan Hengye had really sent a bunch of roses to Meng Jinhuai.

  1. Aww so romantic ❤

  2. what does nanwei mean? like, nan zhu means southern star. So nanwei mean another cardinal point or it literally means “bouquet of roses” and I am too dumb to understand?

  3. aah this is the time where I wish I understood the novel’s original language so I could have a deeper understanding of these names T_T

  4. Is this the same “nanwei” as in thanking someone politely?
